Dear NJCU Community:

On September 18, our nation lost a pillar of light and a champion of equality with the passing of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Throughout her remarkable life, Justice Ginsburg left a legacy as a legal icon that will inspire the generations who follow her. Justice Ginsburg was a heroic, trailblazing champion of women鈥檚 rights and a giant in the history of the Court.

While we mourn the dimming of her brilliant light upon our nation, we celebrate her life and her lasting influence as a tireless advocate for gender equality and women鈥檚 rights throughout her career. Justice Ginsburg successfully fought to eliminate discriminatory laws and ensure equal justice under law for women, and her life鈥檚 work helped change the way the law sees gender.

As the first female president of our institution, it is not lost upon me the profound impact that Justice Ginsburg has had upon my own life and the example she has set as a role model to millions of women in academia, the legal community and beyond.

Moreover, regardless of gender, Justice Ginsburg鈥檚 life serves as a lesson to all of us about living with conviction, principle, dignity, and character, and to asseverate to continue advocating for change until we live in a world where discrimination does not exist.
