Artist Information and Statement

Julio Huamantupa
BFA Candidate

As an artist I feel a strong connection with expressing ideas and stories on a direct manner. That is why I consider Illustration a very appealing career. I use traditional materials like gouache and pastels as well as digital programs to create compositions based on fictional stories or real anecdotes. My past influences vary from classic illustrators including William Blake and Edward Gorey. My latest influences are illustrators John Ken Mortensen and Maurice Sendak. My body of work is mostly stylized characters with high contrast of light and shadow in the compositions. My future artistic direction will be to focus on illustrating picture books, both collaborating with writers and writing my own stories.
