The Department of World Languages and Cultures hosts a chapter of , which is the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society (Sociedad Nacional Honoraria Hisp谩nica), founded at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1919. Sigma Delta Pi鈥檚 motto is the Greek phrase 鈥淪pan铆as Didag茅i Pro谩gomen,鈥 which means 鈥淟et鈥檚 go forth under the guidance of the Spanish language.鈥

The Society鈥檚 purposes are: 
 
To honor those who attain excellence in the study of the Spanish language and in the study of the literature and culture of the Spanish-speaking world.

  • To honor those who have made the Hispanic contributions to modern culture better known in the English-speaking world.
  • To encourage college and university students to acquire a greater interest in, and a deeper understanding of, Hispanic culture.
  • To foster friendly relations and mutual respect between the nations of Hispanic speech and those of English speech.
  • To serve its membership in ways which will contribute to the attainment of the goals and ideals of the society.

If you become a member of the Spanish Society, you will be eligible to apply for a . 


APPLICATION
Any NJCU undergraduate student can become a member of Sigma Delta Pi, as long as:

  1. You are enrolled in a degree program. 
  2. You have completed a minimum of 42 total credits at NJCU by the end of the Fall semester. 
  3. You have completed 18 credits in Spanish at NJCU at the 300 level or above. 
  4. You have attained a 3.20 GPA in Spanish and a 3.00 cumulative GPA.
